Don Higginbotham, Judge of the Williamson County Court at Law No. 3, was born on April 3, 1941 in Lampasas, Texas, to Nelson and Loene Higginbotham. Nelson Higginbotham was a Texas Highway Patrolman from 1938 until 1977, when he retired as Lieutenant.
Having attended public schools in Waco and Tyler, Texas, Judge Higginbotham graduated from Waco High School in 1959. He received his Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Texas at Austin in 1963, and went on to attend the University of Texas Law School where he received his JD degree in 1966 and was admitted to the Texas State Bar.
Having been previously commissioned as a 2d Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps Reserves in 1963, he returned to active duty following law school. He served on active duty for over three years, during which time he was stationed with the 1st Marine Division in the Republic of Vietnam for 13 months as Captain. He saw combat as a Reaction Rifle Company commander. Released from active duty in 1969, he became Attorney Investigator with the Federal Trade Commission. He worked first in the Kansas City Regional Office and then in the Dallas Regional Office, where he served until resigning in 1979 in order to go into private practice. While with the Federal Trade Commission in Dallas, he attended Southern Methodist University and earned a Masters of Liberal Arts degree in 1975 and a Masters of Law degree in 1978.
Following a partnership in a civil law firm in Austin, Texas, he moved to Williamson County in July of 1981 and opened his own office for the practice of law. He practiced in Williamson County (primarily criminal and family law) until his current appointment to the bench, which took place on October 5, 1999. He served as Municipal Judge and the Teen Court Judge of Georgetown, Texas from June 1988 until December 31, 1999, when he resigned to accept appointment as Judge of the newly created County Court at Law No. 3. He formally took the bench as of January 1, 2000 and was elected for the interim term in November of that year.
In addition, he is the former President of the Williamson County Bar Association. Judge Higginbotham is admitted to practice in the United States District Courts in the Northern, Western, and Eastern Districts in Texas and in the United States Court of Military Appeals. He is a retired Colonel, United States Marine Corps Reserves, after over 32 years of military service, and was awarded the Legion of Merit and Combat "V" and some dozen other awards and decorations.
Judge Higginbotham is married to his wife, Debra. They reside in Georgetown, Texas
Judge Higginbotham's Court has jurisdiction over criminal misdemeanors, family law, probate matters and civil suits with up to $100,000.00 actual damages.
